Difficult to answer as there are so many in lots of different fields! I’m going to go with Isaac Newton. His descriptions of gravity and laws of motion laid the foundation for modern engineering, he also contributed significantly to astronomy and mathematics.

Newtons teachings about theory and experimental practice have gone on to form the basis for all modern science.

I think probably Niels Bohr – he was one of the first people to realise that electrons in atoms have strange properties that can only be explained by quantum mechanics and he invited other scientists, such as Einstein to come and work with him in Copenhagen.

A lot of our modern technology depends on the ability to understand atoms and electrons – for example the touch screen of a smart phone depends on quantum mechanics.

I’m going to go with Charles Darwin!

We use the theory of evolution to explain and to predict so much! Plus he had an awesome beard 🙂
