Not all sounds can be heard by all animals, as each species can only hear within a range of loudness (amplitude) and pitch (frequency). Like humans can’t hear super pitch notes, some animals can only hear those! And on top of that, some animals have really sensitive hearing meaning they can hear sounds too faint to be detected by humans!

It varies from species. Some animals have excellent hearing, especially owls. I recently held a Great Grey Owl during a Falconry day. They have huge faces like a satellite dish which channel the sounds towards their ears making their hearing really amazing.

Some animals “hear” using echolation – using sonar like dolphins and bats. The animal transmits ultrasonic clicks which can be picked up by others.
