      Hi autumn98!

It could be, but it doesn’t have to be!

Mine have always clicked when I stand up and I’ve been a runner for 14 years now! Only recently have I had serious knee issues, so the clicking might have been an early sign of it, but my physiotherapist isn’t sure!

Some clicking is just from being stiff – i.e. sitting down for too long!

Clicking combined with pains should be checked out though!

No it is not usually harmful if it is just a clicking noise.

The clicking noise that you hear is actually little bubbles which form in the joint cavity popping when you move. These bubbles are formed of gases which are dissolved in the fluid in the joint.

There is a popular myth about cracking your knuckles giving you arthritis. This hasn’t been proven, in fact studies have found no link between knuckle cracking and arthritis.

Your knee clicking is probably similar, but if you’re concerned about it or it’s causing you pain then I would go see a doctor.
