Hi Gabby! I could write a very long list of injuries I’ve had because I spend my weekends at orienteering races/fell running! This means I’ve broken a couple of bones, woken up in hospital after a blood sugar crash and have some impressive scars to show off…
But the worst….. falling into a (ground) wasps nest at 7am during a night relay race!
I was stung over 50 times all over my legs, arms, chest, face and even on my skull under my hair! I had to take extra strong anti-histamines (like some people do for hayfever) for 4 weeks just to stop me looking like a balloon! I count it as my “near death experience” as people often die from the shock of all the stings.
I’ve had a lot of cuts, bruises and grazes from mountain biking, I broke my collarbone snowboarding once, and I’ve had a concussion from kite flying.
The last one was the scariest as I was flying a big kite and freak gust of wind lifted me into the air and dropped me on my head! The worst part is that I don’t really remember any of that as I had quite a bad concussion. I was wearing a helmet too – I think it would have been much worse if I hadn’t been!
I injured my back at work in a bakery. It wasn’t massively bad at the time but I have ended up having quite a few operations on it since to try to fix it, which has not been very fun. I used to be very active, doing things like river gorge walking and caving but I can’t do those sort of things now because of my back.
Fortunately I’ve not had many injuries; the most recent I can think of was being thrown from a horse, but because I was wearing my hat and body protector it wasn’t too serious.
